Line Infantry:
Line infantry is the broadest and most varied type of military formation. There is no one, two or three ways a line infantry is equipped or deployed. Various militaries have varying doctrines for line infantry and their weapons are often highly varied. A common misconception is that Line infantry often are melee infantry. This is catagorically untrue especially with more modern armies adopting hybrid formations. Using a mixture of weapons.
Line infantry can vary strongly in quality, from levy formations of poorly armed peasents to heavy armored elite dwarfs with hundreds of years of combat experience,
The onlu constant and key factor in determining if a formation is line infantry is its purpose. Line infantry is designed to be in the frontline of combat, and are the primary force expected to make contact with the enemy line formation. They fight in formations and are the so-called frontline of an army.
Types of Line Infantry:
Spearmen
The most popular type of infantry, they are vesatile, cheap to equip, vesatile and effective at fending of enemy forces if in formation. Equipped with shields, they tend to be resistant to hostile attacks if lacking in offensive capabilities if not highly trained.
Pikemen
A variant of spearmen, pikeman are defined by extremely long pikes with far more effective range than spears. They are far more deadly in close formation and are nigh impenetrable with close formation and good discipline against calvary. However a lack of shields, and poor manouvavility means they are easily shattered once their fomation is broken or outflanked. As such they are often used with other infantry.
Shieldmen
Generally used with pikemen, they are equipped with heavy shield and shortswords. Often acting as supplement for formations though they lack offensive capabilities and are very slow.
Swordsmen/Axemen
Often can be catagorised with shieldmen. They may be equipped with longswords in more elite formations, but often are shield and shortsword/axe units, though with a focus on versatility. Well protected against missile fire. They are generally capable vs all types of infantry and calvary but are not excellent vs any
Muskeeters/Arquebus
Able to mass high amount of burst firepower at close range while providing effective cover fire and mid range. The ability to fix bayonets make well trained types of these troops effective in formation against both cavalry and infantry. They generally are used as as hybrid or together with another type of line infantry but can also act alone.
Crossbowmen
The smaller size of crossbow make it suited for sustained mid and close range ranged fire. Often integrated into line formations particularly with shields or pikes. They often are regarded as a lower shock, higher rate of fire arquebus
Shock Infantry.
Shock Infantry refer to specialized infantry designed to breakthrough or quickly reinforce positions. More more tactically flexible than line infantry. They are direct combatants designed to overwhelm enemy line infantry, exploit weaknesses in the enemy lines of plug holes in their own formation.
A key trait of shock infantry is generally a focus of being excellent vs line infantry. While tending to rely less on defensive formations, due to acting as a more offensive forc either attacking or counter attacking. While many are capable of fighting calvary, they tend to be wasted fighting them while also suffering greatly if coming under uncontested missile fire.
Greatweapon Infantry
Armed with heavy two handed weapons, Greatweapon like greataxes, greathammer are excellent weapons or smashing a disrupted enemy formation
Duel Weapon Infantry
Requiring more finesse and thus rarer, duel weapon infantry are preferred by most elite formations. Being able to act almost as blender against infantry.
Support Infantry
Support infantry are generally missile infantry that are designed to stay away from heavy combat and tend to do poorly while under attack.
Bowmen
Bowmen are seen as cheap support infantry. Armed with bows, they tend to use mass volleys of arrows to slowly wear down the enemy and tend to be rather ineffective at killing large amounts of foes, or standing their ground. These are often used by levy formations who can bring large amounts of arrows.
Crossbowmen
Seen as the standard support infantry Crossbowmen trade lower rate of fire for greater range and lethality than bowmen.
Musketters and Arquebus
Also capable of acting as support infantry, they formations may use heavier, longer range and more clumsy weapons. They often have devestating firepower, especially when using heavy muskeets or volley firing but generally have a much lower rate of fire and tend to decrease in effectiveness rapidly when attempting to sustain fire due to unreliability of such weapons
Longbowmen
Seen as the “elite” version of bow men. These infantry are able to use the full capabilty of a longbow. With great training and often high quality bows, they have a high effective range, out ranged only by artillery and heavy black powder weapons while having a high rate of fire. However, they are generally long to train and armies with more manpower often prefer to mass crossbows and/or blackpowder.
Skirmish Infantry
Skirmish infantry are designed to probe and haress the enemy line and act as mobile scouts. High flexibly, mobile and often hard to pin down. Skirmish infantry are not meant for heavy combat and are often lightly armored and equipped with ranged weapons
Calvary:
Light Calvary
Light Calvary or sometimes called Skirmish calvary are fast, lightly armored or unarmed calvary. They are meant to harass, scout and hunt down enemy scouts and skirmish elements. They are often but not always equipped with ranged weapons. They can threaten hostile backline formations but often are poorly suited to direct contact with other cavalry and infantry formations
Assault Calvary
Assault Calvary are designed as flanking, fast elements of a force. Excellent as exploiting weakness, reinforcing falling elements and counter attacking or attacking. However assault cavalry is not meant to attack direct enemy formation.
They are best used against overextended or exposed formation or flanking or used to counter attack or counter charge. They are also often equipped with limited range weapons though these are often their secondary weapons.
Shock Calvary
Shock Calvary are the heaviest and more elite calvary and are designed for one thing only. Charging straight into enemy formations, less mobile and flexible, they however are extremely elite and can shatter formations of lesser infantry with ease
Artillery:
Ballistas
Ballistas are common as secondary or small scale weapons. The ones employed are, lighter with high rates of fire and more versatile payload compared to cannons. They are often employed as mobile heavy weapons or used to add numbers in artillery. However, non enchanted ballistas are increasingly becoming more niche due to their lack of range and firepower to that of cannons
Due to not suffering from black powder buildup, ballistas still remain a reliable, consistent if lacking firepower source if artillery
Cannons
The most powerfull piece of artillery, heavy and expensive. Cannons can fire devestating cannister or round shots that can devestate infantry formations. With far greater range than torsion based artillery, cannons are increasingly becoming the dominant artillery weapon of armies.
A new invention, rifled cannons have come into being, though cost 30 to 50 times more than normal cannons. Though this cannon has ranges of over 4 kilometer.
Cannons suffer from being extremely expensive and often having long reloads and requiring maintence if fired for too long
Rocket Launchers
Rocket launchers are wild and inaccurate weapons often being unweidly and very vulnerable. Yet they have long(if inconsistent) range, a terrifying impact of psychology. Rather than being used to target formations, they often are used as a “fire in that direction to scare the enemy and hopefully hit something"
More precise rockets that use fins have recently also been invented and have helped improve accuracy. Though accuracy is still extremely poor and rocket lauchers tend to be more less ammunition inefficient than cannons. Making them a niche weapons
Fuze based rockets have recently been invented as a marginally more effective anti-air weapon than ballistas and light cannons.
