Background

Characters in LOR can come from a wide variety of background. The available backgrounds are found in the codex. Here are the rules for selecting them

Background Choices & Their Bonuses

When creating your character, you choose a Main Background and optionally one or two Side Backgrounds. The end result will always be a total bonus of +3 to an ability score (spread over up to two different abilities) and two skill/tool proficiencies.

1. Main Background Only:
   
   
• You receive all the benefits of your Main Background. This means you get:
  
  
• Both the Primary ability bonus (+2) and the Secondary ability bonus (+1).
  
  
• Both the Primary and Secondary skill/tool proficiencies provided by the Main Background.
  
  
2. Main Background + 1 Side Background:
   
   
• You still get all the Main Background’s primary benefits (that is, the Main’s full Primary bonuses).
  
  
• From your one Side Background, you get both of this
  
  
• An ability score bonus (choosing either the Side Background’s Primary or its Secondary bonus), but only to a max of +1
  
  
• One of the side backgrounds skill/tool proficiency provided by the secondary background either primary or secondary skill
  
  
  
3. Main Background + 2 Side Backgrounds:
   
   
• You get all the Main Background’s primary benefits as above.
  
  
• Then, for the two Side Backgrounds, you make two choices:
  
  
• One ability score from one of the two background, can be from primary or secondary skill but a max of +1
• One skill from one of the two background from the primary or secondary background skill
  
  

Stacking Limits:

• The same bonus (whether an ability bonus or a skill proficiency) can only be applied up to two times total.
  
  
• For example, if both your Main and Side Backgrounds would grant an ability bonus to Wisdom, you may only count that bonus twice.
  
  
• In such cases, if applying both would exceed the limit, you automatically use the Secondary bonus from your Main Background for that ability instead.
  
  

In Summary:

• Main Only: You get both the Primary and Secondary bonuses from that background.
  
  
• Main + 1 Side: You get the full Primary bonuses from Main, plus one extra bonus from the Side (choose either an extra +1 to an ability score or one extra primary skill proficiency).
  
  
• Main + 2 Side: You get the Main’s full Primary bonuses, then you choose one extra ability bonus (max +1) from one Side Background and one extra primary skill proficiency from the other Side Background.

Custom Backgrounds

You may create a custom background. It must follow the same structure:

• Primary: +2 to an ability score + one skill/tool proficiency

• Secondary: +1 to a different ability score + one skill/tool proficiency

Ensure it fits your backstory and is approved by the DM.
